Boy On The Run — already long-listed for the City Press Non-fiction Award in 2018 before it’s even out — draws on my vivid childhood memories to tell the story of a black gay man coming of age in post-apartheid. The memoir reveals how my coming of age was characterized by escaping the last image of my mother in a puddle of blood the day she was shot by her boyfriend. It has been a tough book to write, but one that certainly had to be written by me.
Boy On The Run is a story about my travels across South Africa and how they became a way for me to come to terms with grief and begin healing. It is a story about how I found myself on the road.
At the end of 2018, I left my job as a travel journalist to freelance, so that I can have the time and mental energy to focus on telling my story. I took a chance on me and committed myself to pouring my soul into my art.
So … after a few offers from publishers, I finally decided to publish my memoir with Jacana Media. Maggie Davey and Bridget Impey, veteran publishers at Jacana (and now owners), have been very passionate about the unfolding book project from the first moment they received the sample chapters. They believe so much in the power of my voice, and I remain inspired by their confidence to deliver a great book.
Jacana Media are over the moon to be publishing Boy on the Run. An extraordinary story, luminous, brilliant and beautiful. A story that we fell instantly in love with. Roll on the publication party, we can’t wait
Jacana Media said yesterday upon receiving the signed contract.
